Must see places in Turkey: Gölyazı
Gölyazı village is a fishing village, located on the edge of Uluabat lake in Bursa’s Nilüfer district. It is not a very well-known village. It has become popular as a tourist attraction in recent years.
Gölyazı has important features in terms of the common history of Turks and Greeks. Gölyazı, which is an old Greek village and today mostly people who migrated from Thessaloniki with the population exchange, was a settlement center where Turks and Greeks lived together and Greeks were in the majority during the Ottoman period.
Turkish immigrants, who came with the exchange agreement in 1930's, harmonized with Gölyazı and its surroundings, and developed the environmental culture with their industriousness. My mother’s grand family also immigrated from Greece and settled in this village, in an abandoned Greek house.
My family is still in this village, and I know almost every corner and every season of Gölyazı. So let me be your guide, and let me introduce you to this tiny little village.
Gölyazı is one of the richest ancient settlements in Bursa. The history of Gölyazı, which was founded on a deep peninsula, dates back to BC. It dates back to the 6th century. The ancient name of Gölyazı was Apollonia and the locals still use this name.
So, what is worth seeing in Gölyazı?
1. Best Sunset
Gölyazı is especially frequented by photographers with its unique sunset. In the village, which is an island, you can find the same beauty at every point of the sunset. If you are interested in photography, you can add this place to your list.
2. Sandal tour
In Gölyazı there are rows of rowing boats along the shores of the islet. There are 11 islands in Uluabat Lake, and you can go to a few of them with fishermen’s boats. On the most classic tour, it goes to an island with the ruins of a monastery and water lilies. It is forbidden to go to the island where the monastery is located, but the water lilies covering the lake fascinate you. From May to November, the water lilies open at 9 am and close at 3 pm.
3. Greet the storks
Storks are the most precious guests of the lake. The village is a stork paradise. They set off from Africa, cross the Arabian Peninsula, and come to Turkey in the spring and stop in this village.
We have such a superstition that if we see the Stork in the first air that year, we believe that we will travel a lot that year.
4. Tuna fish
This reason alone is enough for me to go to Gölyazı! Tuna fish is famous in the village and is cooked on fire. A tomato and pepper sauce is made on the side. All of the businesses in the village are small family businesses, so you will definitely eat a local flavor first hand. I highly recommend it.
Tomorrow I will go to Gölyazı from Istanbul to see my family. Also, it’s fig season, and who doesn’t love to eat fruit from the branch? While thinking about all this, I wanted others to know that such a place exists. I hope you had fun. Please let me know in the comments if you have been or if you add them to your to-do list.
